Police officials testify US Capitol riot was a “planned, coordinated attack” | HIGHLIGHTS
On Tuesday United States senators held their first hearing to discuss what led up to the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and what can be done to prevent it from ever happening again.
Former Chief of U.S. Capitol Police, Steven Sund, outlined for the Senate Rules Committee and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee why he felt that Congress was the target of a “coordinated” attack.
Acting Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee told the committee he was “stunned” by the initial delay and reluctance on the part of the Pentagon to deploy the National Guard in assistance of Capitol police.
The U.S. House of Representatives’ former top security official also on Tuesday denied that authorities had rejected stationing National Guard forces at the Capitol last month ahead of a rally by Donald Trump’s supporters out of concerns that it might look bad.
Paul Irving, the House’s former sergeant-at-arms instead said that intelligence had not warranted having troops at the Capitol on Jan. 6, when supporters of the then-president attacked the building, leaving five dead.
